I think the best 100mm wheel I've skated on was the Xenan 90a 100mm wheel. When Andy at Xenan
started making 100mm wheels I started out on his 81a 100mm wheel then
moved on to his 85a 100mm wheel. Then he came out with a 90a 100mm wheel so
I got some in to try and they felt a little faster. Then after skating
on those for 2 weeks I thought I would go back and try the 85a's
again and felt like I was skating in molasses. I immediately put
the 90a's back on and knew I would not skate on anything lower than a
90a 100mm wheel again. Always the limiting factor on wheel hardness is the
vibration level and slipperiness. To get the best roll and wear in a wheel
you continue to increase the hardness until the vibration level becomes to high and or the wheel becomes to slippery. Now as far
as the 90a 100mm Xenan wheel the vibration level of
the wheel was comparable to an 80mm 83a wheel because the larger hub of a
100mm wheel took up much more vibration than the smaller hub on an 80mm
wheel. So even though the durometer was 90a there
was no problem with vibration (something you could never get away with on a 80mm wheel). The other potential problem is slippage.
I found no problem with slippage with this wheel,
if I did I wouldn't have skated on it as if there is any slippage it
simply won't work. So with this wheel you got the benefits of an easier
rolling (faster) wheel and at the same time longer wear with out the draw backs
of higher vibration and slippage. This is a win, win situation. Well with
that said the new Labeda wheel hardness has gone up
even more than the old Xenan 100mm 90a wheel. Labeda'a 100mm wheel is 93a. They are now able to go to a
93a wheel because they have left more urethane on the wheel for more
vibration dampening. The harder 93a wheel will roll better (faster) and
will wear even longer than the Xenan 90a wheel. The
reason they were able to do this is they made the hub smaller and used more
vibration dampening urethane. I do believe the weight increase of the
added urethane to cancel out the added vibration of a 93a wheel is worth the
superior roll (and wear) you will get from this wheel. Your going to need to
try a set for yourself to experience the roll and wear of a 93a 100mm wheel
with the vibration of an 83a 80mm wheel.
